Kolkata Law College Gang-Rape: BJP Demands CM Mamata's Resignation, High-Level Inquiry Launched Amidst Outrage

Kolkata, West Bengal: The alleged #GangRape of a 24-year-old female student inside the South Calcutta Law College campus on Wednesday has ignited a fierce political firestorm in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (#BJP) today launching a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (#TMC) government. Demanding Chief Minister #MamataBanerjee's immediate resignation, the BJP has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to probe the heinous crime, which they allege points to "state-sponsored brutality" and a severe breakdown of #LawAndOrder.

The shocking incident, which reportedly took place between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on Wednesday, June 25, while the victim was at the college to fill out exam forms, has sent shockwaves across the state and the nation. Medical examinations conducted at a state-run medical college have reportedly corroborated the victim's allegations, revealing signs of "forceful penetration, bite marks, nail scratches, and assault marks around her neck."

Four Arrests Made, Khardaha Resident Among Them

Kolkata Police have acted swiftly, making four arrests in connection with the case. The prime accused, Monojit Mishra (31), a former student of the college and now a contractual staffer and practicing lawyer at the Alipore court, was arrested on Thursday. Two other current students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were also apprehended the same day. All three were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Alipore on Friday and remanded to police custody till July 1.

In a significant development today, Saturday, June 28, police arrested the college security guard, Pinaki Banerjee (55), a resident of Bandipur, #Khardaha. Banerjee was on duty when the crime allegedly occurred in the guard's room itself. Police seized CCTV footage showing the security guard "loitering outside" during the incident, allegedly failing to assist the victim or alert authorities.

BJP Intensifies Offensive, Demands CM's Apology

The BJP wasted no time in politicizing the grim incident, framing it as a testament to the deteriorating #WomenSafety situation in West Bengal. BJP National President J.P. Nadda today formed a four-member inquiry committee to visit the crime scene and submit a detailed report. The committee comprises former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra.

BJP leaders, including National Spokesperson Sambit Patra and MLA Shankar Ghosh, launched scathing attacks on CM Mamata Banerjee. Patra slammed the alleged "insensitivity and cruelty towards women" by the state government, while Ghosh openly demanded Banerjee's resignation, stating, "This incident reveals the character of TMC, their thoughts towards women. Under her rule, no one is safe." He further alleged that the "entire vicious cycle of gang-rape is state-sponsored" and that the CM's "irresponsible behaviour" encourages criminals.

The BJP also highlighted the alleged connection of prime accused Monojit Mishra with the TMC's student wing, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). While Mishra's social media accounts reportedly show him as a former chief of the TMCP's youth wing in the college, the ruling TMC has denied that he held any important position recently, asserting that the TMCP has had no active units in that college for years. TMC legislator Ashok Kumar Deb, president of the college's governing body, also denied recommending Mishra's name for his contractual recruitment.

Victim's Harrowing Account and NCW Intervention

Details emerging from the victim's complaint reveal a chilling sequence of events. She alleged that after refusing a marriage proposal from Mishra, she was forcibly taken to the college's student union room, molested, and then dragged to the security guard's room. There, she was allegedly sexually assaulted while the other two accused stood guard, and was threatened with a hockey stick when she resisted. The accused allegedly filmed the assault and threatened to circulate the video if she reported the crime.

The #NationalCommissionForWomen (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, expressing "deep concern" and urging a "time-bound investigation" under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The NCW has also requested full police cooperation for its member, Dr. Archana Mujumdar, to meet the victim and her family, along with a demand for internal and external medical reports within three days and strong safety measures for the victim

As the political blame game continues, the focus remains firmly on ensuring justice for the victim and addressing the fundamental questions raised about #WomenSafety and accountability within West Bengal's educational institutions.
