Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas: A high-profile kidnapping and ransom case has sent immediate shockwaves through West Bengal's political landscape. In a dramatic turn of events, two influential Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders from Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas, have been arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of a Delhi-based fish trader and a demand for a staggering ₹1 crore ransom. This #BreakingNewsBengal incident has quickly become a focal point, raising serious questions about #LawAndOrder and #PoliticalAccountability within the state.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Saddam Mandal, who serves as the vice-president of the Trinamool Congress's Charghat Panchayat in Swarupnagar, and Sajjan Alam, another prominent TMC leader from the same area whose wife is reportedly a ruling party panchayat member. They were nabbed by West Bengal Police on Monday (June 16), along with an accomplice named Jamaluddin Sheikh.
The Kidnapping Plot: A Business Dispute Turns Sour
The victim, Delhi-based fish trader Nazim Chauhan, was allegedly kidnapped for a ransom of ₹1 crore.
To resolve this long-standing conflict, Jasimuddin reportedly called Nazim Chauhan to Basirhat to collect the amount owed. However, what was supposed to be a business meeting turned sinister.
Dramatic Abduction and Swift Police Action
According to police, Nazim Chauhan arrived at Kolkata airport on Sunday morning (June 15) and took an app-based taxi to Basirhat. Jasimuddin himself went to the airport to pick up Nazim. When the taxi reached the Kachkal area under Shasan police station, Jasimuddin allegedly instructed the cab driver, Mirajul Ghazi, to stop. Suddenly, another car arrived, and several individuals forcibly dragged Nazim from the taxi and pushed him into their vehicle. To mislead onlookers, Jasimuddin was also pulled into the car, making it appear as if both were being abducted.
The kidnappers then transported Nazim to a secluded location in Basirhat, from where they contacted his family in Delhi, demanding the exorbitant ransom of ₹1 crore.
The turning point came when the observant taxi driver, Mirajul Ghazi, immediately drove to the Shasan police station and reported the suspicious incident. Acting swiftly on this crucial information, the police registered a complaint and launched an intensive probe.
Soon after, Jasimuddin, the alleged mastermind, brazenly called the taxi driver, admitting his involvement in the kidnapping and stating that Nazim would be released upon receipt of the ransom.
TMC's Dilemma: Implications for Grassroots Leadership
The arrest of two elected representatives and party functionaries has put the Trinamool Congress in a difficult position. While the party has a stated "zero tolerance" policy towards corruption and criminal activities, such incidents at the grassroots level fuel opposition criticism and public concern. Samad Mandal is identified as the vice-president of a panchayat, adding weight to his political standing.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend Jasimuddin Mandal, the main accused, who is still absconding. Police are working to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and ensure all culprits are brought to justice.
This high-profile case underscores the vigilance required by law enforcement and highlights the need for continuous scrutiny of individuals in positions of power. NewsWalaFeed will continue to provide real-time updates on this unfolding story, as it impacts the very fabric of #BengalPolitics and public trust.
